To Watch

Movies, TV shows, anime, maybe even long form Youtube docs/rly good video essays we'll see ☼

  • Cutie Honey (TV 1973-74)
  • Angelic Layer (2001)

Mothra VS Godzilla

Ishiro Honda ☼ 1964

Mothra is my favorite kaiju!! Having her egg be bought and sold by greedy people and STILL giving her life to protect them, queen of being the bigger person (literally too I guess.) I thought Goji looked exceptionally jiggly and gelatinous in this film, which is obviously a major plus.

I’ve heard people say this was the beginning of the formula for future Godzilla movies, especially the VS films, and I could definitely see it. I’m watching the movies in random order, so I might go watch the first VS and most recent VS movie soon just to compare them.

Last Man On Earth

Ubaldo Ragona & Sidney Salkow ☼ 1964

The first time I’ve watched a Vincent Price film and I immediately understood the hype, he has a distinct kind of anxiety that just seeps out of the film and infects you. Also every time he was on screen I could hear “What a Man” by Salt-N-Pepa playing faintly from somewhere…… so weird….

Stargate

Seasons 1 & 2 ☼ 1997/98

Campy sci-fi with lovable characters that’s scratching my Star Trek itch. Also everyone is hot. Even though Michael Shanks’ haircut got worse in S2 we still love him.

The Odyssey

Christopher Nolan ☼ 2026

I knew what would happen but I was still on the edge of my seat, it was 3 hours long with no good potty breaks, and I’m already trying to find a time to go see it again.

Godzilla vs. Megalon

Jun Fukuda ☼ 1973

“He must have somehow programmed himself to grow larger!”

We actually had this tape playing in the background during an incredible DAWless analog synth show we had at the shop recently (thanks Fantishow and Lockgroove!) but then a friend and customer bought it before we got the chance to ACTUALLY watch it (thanks Cody!) so we watched the Criterion edition on HBO and god was it crisp and beautiful.

Loved every second of Jet Swaguar, loved Megalon smacking his own butt, obviously loved this classic Goji moment:

flying dropkick of the century

This was a completely unserious Kaiju pro wrestling match and I loved every second of it.

Sailor Moon Crystal

Season 1 ☼ 2014

I’m sorry if I ever recommended you watch Crystal if you’ve talked to me about wanting to get into Sailor Moon, I fear I have led you astray. A closer adaptation to the manga and stripped of like a dozen hours of filler but at what cost?

Honestly, I thought I could get through the art style thing but it made me realize how much the art of the original series was part of the charm. The characters all look older, with freaky yaoi proportions and sterilized facial expressions. Apparently this gets better in S3 but I’m not sure I’ll watch that far… Also is it crazy for me to say that Mamo and Usagi being too nice in the beginning kinda ruins [spoilers but iykyk.] It felt like it hit harder in the original, make Mamoru mean again

Anyways if you really do want to get into Sailor Moon this is an okay way to do it but lazdo’s reduced filler guide is still better.

Supergirl

Craig Gillespie ☼ 2026

Not anywhere near as bad as the internet says, not quite as good as I had hoped. Like it was no James Gunn’s Superman, but good lord misogyny is one hell of a drug. It was a solid superhero movie and a really fun watch. My main gripes were that I really hoped/expected it to be more colorful (everything looked very Star Wars desert planet vibes,) and no, I wasn’t a fan of the song pick for the big fight (sometimes you can just have an original score playing, like are we gonna do needle drops in Clayface?) I also liked the soundtrack a lot besides that one song…. Anyways I need to read the comic it’s based on now because apparently it’s amazing

Splash

Ron Howard ☼ 1984

Starting off strong with a definitely super good and totally not at all aged-like-milk fantasy rom-com starring a young Tom Hanks. Variety’s list of best romance movies has Dirty Dancing at 50 and this at 48….
